A variation on Square C-2 crochet tutorial

For the past six months I have been working on rehabbing the myriad crochet bits that populate my life and my home, and I have been transforming them from crochet remnants to five and six-inch crochet squares, and all of that has led me to devising this variation on a much loved crochet square.

One of the crochet remnants I found while working on this was an abandoned center of Square C-2, which is a love, but large granny square.

Completing the square as originally designed would make it much larger than the guidelines I had, so using a 5.0 mm hook, and worsted weight yarn, I transformed the remnant (seen in the second row, far left of this photo):

I love this crochet square and thought that other people might want to be able to make a five-inch crochet square like this for their own use, so here is the tutorial:

Variation on Square C-2

Worsted weight yarn
5.0 mm hook
Gauge: completed square measured 5″ across

Beginning with any color, ch 4 and join with a sl st.
Round 1: Work 8sc into the ring and join with a sl st to first sc. (8sc)

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc) and make a dc into same stitch as joining, *work 2dc into the next st* 7 times. Join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off. (16 dc).

Round 3: Using a new color, work hdc in any stitch from the previous round, ch 1, (hdc in next st, ch 1) 15 times. Join with sl st to first hdc made. Finish off. (16 hdc, 16 ch-1 sp)

Round 4: Using a new color, work and hdc in any ch-1 sp, ch2, (hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 2) 15 times more. Join with sl st to first hdc made. Fasten off. (16 hdc, 16 ch-2 sps)

Round 5: Using a new color, join yarn in any ch-2 sp and ch 3 (counts as first dc) work 2dc, ch 1, (dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 3 times. [(3dc, ch3, 3dc in next ch-2 space) ch 1, (dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 3 times] 3 times, 3 dc in first ch-2 sp, chain 3, join with sl st to first dc made. Fasten off.

Round 6: in any ch-3 space 2 hdc, [hdc in each of next 13 sts or ch-1 spaces, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc in next ch-3 sp)] three times, hdc in each of next 13 sts or ch-1 spaces, 2 hdc, ch 2 in first ch-2 space, join with slip st to first hdc. Fasten off.
