Yesterday (December 15), I posted this blog entry which included this photo of two hats I had made using Kate Steinke’s Simply Striped Slouchy Beanie:

Today, Kate generously offered to let me feature her pattern on my blog, so I created this dedicated page for any and all who need/want to make a simple yet gratifyingly wonderful hat designed by hooker known as The Crochet Engineer, Kate Steinke.
So much thanks to Kate for making her wonderful (and wonderfully simple) pattern available.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
TECHNIQUE USED: Crochet
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 21” circle, approx 14” length or as desired YARN: Berroco Vintage or other worsted weight yarn in 2 colors; Purple (color A) and Grey (color B)
CROCHET HOOK: One size US H-8 (5 mm), or size to obtain gauge ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Yarn needle
STITCHES USED
Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), slip stitch (sl st),
Hat
With A, ch 4, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch3, 11 dc into ring, working B through last half of last st, join with sl st to top ch of starting ch-3. (12dc)
Rnd 2: Continuing with B, ch 3, dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each dc around, working A through last half of last st, join with sl to top ch of starting ch-3. (24 dc)
Rnd 3: With A, ch 3, dc in same st as join, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, working B through last half of last st, join with sl to top ch of starting ch-3. (36 dc)
Rnd 4: With B, ch 3, dc in same st as join, * dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, working A through last half of last st, join with sl to top ch of starting ch-3. (48 dc)
Rnd 5: With A, ch 3, dc in same st as join, * dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, working B through last half of last st, join with sl to top ch of starting ch-3. (60 dc)
Repeat Rnd 6 until desired length alternating colors for each row.
Last Row: Ch 2, hdc in each dc around, fasten off, weave in ends.
