As some of my readers are aware, I finished a project yesterday that I had tried to make at varying times over the last twelve-and-a-half years, and it left me wondering: what should I do the morning after?
I had woven in all of the ends, smoothed out the project as best I could, and taken photos. I had even cleared off an extra bed in my crochet empire/guest room, and put the newly completed afghan on it.
Now what, I wondered?
Because I had found making the African Flower Hexagon so relaxing and restorative, I decided that on this “morning after” I would make one hexagon as a transition to whatever is next, and here is what I accomplished:

This in turn, reminded me that someone, somewhere, had asked me how I had made the half-hexagon I used in the African Flower, Power Bag that I made.
So today while I ruminated on how to spend my morning after, I decided to document the process of crocheting an African flower half hexagon with what I hope are helpful directions with photos.
A key difference when making an African Flower half-Hexagon is that you work in rows rather than in the round. Additionally, I find it very helpful to weave in ends after completing each row. For the demonstration that follows, I am using Red Heart Super Saver yarn and a 4.0 mm Etimo crochet hook.
To begin, chain 4. Join with sl st to make a ring:

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into ring, ch1, 2 dc into ring, ch 1, 2 dc into ring. Fasten off. This is the right side of the half-hexagon (RS)

Row 2: Continue working on right side. Join new yarn with sl st in first ch-3 dc of row 1. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work another dc into same space, work *2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-1 space, repeat from * 1 time more, work 2 dc in last dc of row 1. Fasten off.

Row 3: Using the same color as in row 2, continue to work on the right side, and join the new yarn with sl st in first ch-3 dc of row 2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 3 dc in same space as joining, work *7 dc in next ch-1 space, repeat from * one time more, work 4 dc in top of last dc of row 2. Fasten off.

Row 4: Using a new color, continue to work on the right side, and join the new yarn with sc in first ch-3 dc of row 3, work 1sc in each of the next 3 dc. *Make 1 long dc (ldc) by working around the space in the second row, work 1sc in each of the next 7 dc, repeat from * once more, work 1 lcd into the space in the second row, work 1sc in each of the 4 remaining dc. Fasten off.

Border: Using a new color, continue to work on the right side and join the new yarn with a sl st in the first sc of row 4. Ch 2 (this will not count as the first stitch. * Work 1dc in each of the next 7 sts, work dc, ch1, dc in next st, repeat from * once more. Work 1 dc in each of the next 6 sts. dc together the last 2 sts. Ch3 (this counts as a dc) work 25dc evenly across the edge. Fasten off.

And now that I have documented this crochet half hexagon, I’m ready to have another cup of morning after coffee.
