The Super Bowl has come to be, for me, a time to work on large projects where I work out elements of design that tend to resurface in future projects.
This tradition began for me with Super Bowl 2011, when I worked on this piece titled “If Frank Stella Crocheted”:

I later modified the design to meet the specifications for Coats & Clark, and the redesign resulted in Bright Squares Art Throw:

For Super Bowl 2012, I was busy working on this textured vanilla piece from Maggy Ramsay’s Magic Motif Crochet:

and that texture resurfaced in my 2012 North Carolina State Fair project, resulting in this crochet rendition of an Amish quilt:

This year I am working on a long-forgotten Anne Halliday design that can be found in Leisure Arts pamphlet #3362:

The specific project is titled “Creature Collection.” I, however, call my rendition of this project, “If pigs (and dogs and birds and bears and frogs and lions and turtles) flew.”
After getting the ends woven in on some of the non-creature hexagons that resurfaced last week, this weekend, I spent my time getting a start on the colorful creatures.
First up was the lion, but I only got this far:

Next, I worked on the bird. Here is the foundation:

and here it is with the parts assembled, but not yet attached:

Lastly, I got a start on three frogs:

I don’t know how this project will transform me; I only know that it will.
