I rethink the cookies for the shawl and write up the coffee cup cozy pattern

Today I began appliquéing the cookies the “put a cookie on it” shawl-to-be, only to find that the cookies, despite looking very charming, were a bit clunky on the eminently drapeable shawl, so I went back to the drawing board and came up with these thinner, less rigid cookies:

crochetbug, crochet cookie appliques, crochet cookies, crochet circles, crochet cookie embellishment
The less structurally rigid cookies for the put a cookie on it shawl-to-be

But going back to the drawingboard always takes time, so in the interest of getting something done and working toward one of the summer’s stated goals (writing up patterns for some of the projects I have designed), I decided to start with the pattern for psychedelic coffee cup cozy:

A psychedelic Victorian coffee cozy

While I made the cozy in the photo above with a variegated worsted weight acrylic yarn, to make the stitches easier to see, I used a bright, solid color (Red Heart Super Saver spring green) for the exemplar that follows.

To make a coffee cup cozy you will need:

4.5mm hook
worsted weight yarn of your choice
a yarn needle (bent-tipped Clover or Hiya Hiya™ are my favorite)

special stitches:

sc decrease: insert hook into next st, YO (Yarn Over) and pull through to front (two loops on hook), insert hook into next st, YO, pull through to front (three loops on hook), YO, pull through all three loops. sc decrease made.

Chain 14

Work in the back ridge loop for the first row only:

Working through the back ridge stitch in the foundation chain

Row 1: 2sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in each of the next 10 ch, insert hook into next chain, YO and pull through to front (two loops on hook), insert hook into last chain, YO, pull through to front (three loops on hook), YO, pull through all three loops, sc decrease made. Chain 1 turn. (13 sc)

For the next 19 rows you will work through the BACK LOOPS ONLY.

Row 2: sc decrease over next two stitches, sc in each of next 10 sts, 2 sc in last st. Chain 1 turn. (13 sc)

The first twenty rows of the project

With right sides together, insert hook through both loops of stitch just completed and through both loops of the last chain of the foundation row. Yarn over, and complete a slip stitch.

Continue to insert the hook through both loops of the corresponding stitches. (13 sl st)

The joining seam completed with the wrong side out

The wrong side of the project is now facing out. Turn the crocheted cylinder you have just made right side out.

Bottom edge

Round 1: Chain 1. Mark this chain with a moveable stitch marker. It counts as your first sc. Working into the edge of what will be the bottom of the coffee cup cozy, make 19 evenly spaced sc. Join with slip st to first chain made. (20 sc).

Round 2:Chain 1. Mark this chain with a moveable stitch marker. It counts as your first sc. *Skip next stitch, 3 dc in next stitch, skip next st, sc in next st, repeat from * three times more. Skip next stitch 3 dc in next st, join with slip st to beginning chain 1. Fasten off leaving a tail of at least 4″ (Five 3dc shells and five sc).

Turn the coffee cozy 180º so that the edge just completed is at the bottom.

Top edge

Round 1: With a slip loop on your hook (one loop on the hook), insert the hook into the edge you are now working on. YO and pull through to front (two loops now on the hook), YO and pull through both loops. First sc completed.

I finish off the last stitch of the coffee cup cozy

Now all that is left to do is weave in the ends and make a coffee run.

  1. Can’t wait to get home and grab some yarn and make a few!!!!! One for tea and the other for coffee 🙂

  2. Thanks for the tutorial.
Some time ago I tried to make the cozy. I choose a variegated yarn that resulted in a terry cloth kind of fabric. Nice for a cozy, but very hard to see the stitches!
I will give it another try with different yarn.
