A crochet slacker is not the same thing as slacker crochet.

If you have ever seen the movie, Slacker, then you know that it is an a movie with an odd narrative structure. The story is advanced when the scene ends, and the reader of the narrative departs (or stays) with character who was in the scene, but is not the character from whose point of view the story is told.

The narrative of the structure is constantly shifting, and until new scene begins, you don’t know what thread the story will follow.

So while a crochet slacker is someone who doesn’t get her crochet done (and doesn’t care that she didn’t get it done), slacker crochet is when a crocheter follows the crochet project she is working on and allows it to lead her on crochet paths she didn’t plan to traverse.

That is where I found myself this morning.

I had just finished the third and fourth textured strips for the red and gray crochet Viking helmet I am working on:

when I started to wonder how a gray and red Viking helmet would look.

I had originally planned to finish making all of pieces for the first hat, but with two horns still to crochet for the first hat, I instead took a crochet detour, and began working on the base yet another Viking helmet for a baby, but this time in gray:

Curious where this journey with hook and yarn would take me, I persisted, and by mid-afternoon, I had the base all done, and I had even woven in the ends and trimmed them:

But by now, I was ready to set the Viking helmets aside and focus on finishing the washable crochet purse.

At the moment, it feels as if the COVID-19 pandemic will never be over, but as I know from my husband’s family’s history with the 1918 Flu Epidemic, these things do end. We might be forever changed, but we will also need to pick up and move forward, and assuming I get that chance, I want a new bag for the occasion.

A washable bag, a colorful bag, a bag that will be hard to misplace or overlook, and I today, I got just a bit closer to my goal.

I was able to fold it over before making a critical join to get some idea of how the bag will look:

Then I took a moment to place the final two squares to see how it would look when it was all put together:

And from this side, at least, it looks like I am going to be able to find myself some wonderful adventures.
