Square E-1

My trusty 4.5 mm Etimo hook in my hand, and my Red Heart Super Saver yarn stash at my side, I finally finished Square E-1 this evening as I watched the second game of the Final Four.

I was able to follow the directions given for Square E-4 through Rnd 5. After that, I had to make alterations.

One obvious difference between the directions given and the Square E-5 shown in photographs is that the 6th round of the Square E-5 pictured has a Round 6 that is single, rather than double, crochet, and that it is seven, rather than six rounds. That, however, was a straight forward omission of what I will call Round 5.5.

Had the only difficulty I was going to encounter been the omission described above, it would have been very simple to add the single crochet round that was pictured. My problem was that the gauge resulted in a square sufficiently smaller from what was shown that I had to make alterations beginning with Round 5 in order to create a square that would better fit with the squares already made. What I did is as follows:

Round 6: Attach new color in ch-3 corner. Ch 4 (counts as first hdc and ch2), work another hdc into same ch-3 space, *hdc in each of next 17 sc, (hdc, ch2, hdc)in ch-3 space, repeat from * twice more, hdc in each of next 17 sc, join with sl st to first hdc and fasten off.

Round 7: Attach new color in ch-2 corner. Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch2), work another dc into same ch-3 space, *dc in each of next 19 hdc, (dc, ch2, dc)in ch-2 space, repeat from * twice more, dc in each of next 19 dc, join with sl st to first dc and fasten off.

Round 8: Attach new color in any ch-2 corner. Ch3 counts as first dc. *(3dc, ch3, 3dc) in ch-2 space, sk next 2 dc, 3dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, 3dc in next dc, [sk 1 dc, 3dc in next dc], repeat from [ to ] four times more, sk next 2 dc, 3dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, 3dc in next dc, repeat from * 3 times more, join with sl st to first dc. Fasten off.

The result Square looks like this:
