Square I-2

Square I-2 is the last square for which directions are given for the Granny Square Sampler Afghan in Better Homes and Gardens Crocheting & Knitting, and, as it happens, it is the last square that I finished.

After much trial and error, this is my final square:

I made this square by doing the following:

With first color, Ch 6 and join with a sl st to the first chain made.

Rnd 1: Ch1, work 8sc into the ring formed. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch1, work sc in same st as joining, *ch 3, sc in next st, repeat from * 6 times more, ch 2, join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1 (counts as first sc) work 5 sc in ch-2 sp, *sc in sc of previous round, work 5 sc in next ch-2 sp, repeat from * 6 times more. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Sl st through both loops of next 2 sc, sl st into back ridge of next sc and ch 4 (counts as first trc), work 1 trc, ch 3, work 2 trc in back ridge of same st, * sk next 6 sts, work (1 dc, 3 trc, 1 dc) into back ridge of next st, sk next 5 sts, work (2 trc, ch 3, 2 trc) into back ridge of next st, repeat from * 2 times more, sk next 5 sts, work (1 dc, 3 trc, 1 dc) into back ridge of next st. Join with sl st to first trc made. Fasten off.

Rnd 5: For this round, work in the back ridge of the stitch indicated. In any ch-3 corner, with a new color, *work (2dc, ch 3, 2 dc)in the 2nd chain of the ch-3 sp, dc in next st, sk next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, ch 2, sk next st, work 1 sc in next st, work hdc in next st, sk next st, work dc in next st, repeat from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to first trc made. Fasten off.

Rnd 6: With new color and in any ch-3 corner, work (2sc, ch 2, 2sc), sc in each of next 5 sts, 3 sc in ch-2, sc in each of next 5 sts, repeat from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to first sc made. Fasten off.

Rnd 7: With new color and in any ch-2 corner work (3dc, ch 3, 3dc),[ sk 2 sts, work 3dc into next st]5 times, repeat from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to first dc made. Fasten off.

It’s taken 12 years, but now I have all my squares done.
