Yesterday shortly before my son and I set out to get to his trumpet lesson, he checked the mail.

To my delight, there was a package for me from my swapping partner:

Clearly she takes the Sisterhood of Colors VERY seriously and makes sure that she covers all bases.

What was inside ended up being as colorful as the mailer. There was a star in the spirit of all things colorful and all things amigurumi:

At first glance, I overlooked a crucial detail of what she had done, but because there seemed to be a lot more movement than what I usually see with variegated yarn, I looked more closely and saw that while the final round was black to make the whole thing “pop,” she had alternated rounds of the variegated yarn with rounds of solid coordinating colors.

This reminded me of the Multicolor Coordinate List I had found at Coats and Clark online.

The list details the solid Red Heart Super Saver colors that coordinate with the various Red Heart Super Saver variegated colors. While I have not found the list to be as expansive as I would make it, it is a very good starting point if you want to experiment with variegated yarns.

I also thought it would be worthwhile to document how the suggested colors looked with actual examples of the yarns photographed in daylight.

First, I looked at Red Heart Super Saver Seagrass:

While the Multi-color Coordinate List suggests the following: Cornmeal, Buff, Aruba Sea, Tea Leaf, and Spa Blue, I also thought that Honeydew (bottom left) also worked with the Seagrass, and I would certainly consider including it with the listed colors in any projects I work.

Next, I looked at Red Heart Super Saver Marrakesh:

The coordinating colors here are Café, Cornmeal, Carrot, and Magenta. I think the addition of the Café would be a wonderful color to ground any project that uses the other four yarns.

Overall, I found the list very helpful, and as soon as I finish with my giant, Frank Stella granny square, I am going to use the list as a guide to experiment with my swapping partner’s color method.
