I have never seen one of Cate Blanchett’s movie, but that does not stop me from being one of her biggest fans.

By now, a lot of people have seen this photo:

This dress has been a source of much discussion in blogs and on message boards in the crochet world since Ms. Blanchett was first photographed wearing it. While the colors are a bit subdued for my taste, someone in my family sent me a link today that took me to the following visual troika:

In addition to the viewing the photos, the reader/viewer was asked to vote for who wore it best.

For me, the clear favorite was Cate Blanchett.

Despite the fact that all were worthy entries, and despite the fact that the dress, the scarf, and the afghan all make use of multi-colored granny squares trimmed with a final round of black, I felt that Cate Blanchett best captured the joy and campiness of crochet, and that she wore it with a particular elan that Mary-Kate and Roseanne are not able to achieve.

Designed by a duo known as Romance Was Born, Cate’s Blanket, as it has come to be known gets extra points because the designers made the dress from an afghan that had originally been made by one of their mothers.

This has to be the ultimate upcycle.
