Lucky for me, today’s weather was relatively mild with plenty of sunshine and few breezes — the only thing missing? Time to sleep.
This allowed me to work on my 2011 North Carolina State Fair project for much of the afternoon from the comfort of my outdoor office, free of both the cat and her hair.
With the days now considerably shorter than they were in August when I began this project, I decided that the highest and best use of my outdoor time was to determine which colors would go where, and to then begin piecing the motifs together on an “as needed” basis. I then took photographs of the motifs to be in their varying states of done-ness, and put the pieces in plastic bags that zip shut so that I could finish the “sewing” portion of the piecing by the light of a good lamp.
Here are some of the motifs that are partially pieced:

And here are the motifs (completed and waiting to be completed) en masse in the order in which they will be arranged when I begin the final joining:

Tomorrow promises to be the warmest day of the week with continued sunshine, at least until late afternoon, by which time I hope to have all of the motifs laid out, photographically documented, and ready to be joined to what is now the center of the project.
Wow Leslie, this is looking great!
Leslie, you’re doing a great job!!!
WOW! this is looking great. I can’t imagine sewing all those little pieces together!
When you are finished with this, I’d love to pick your brain on your joining technique. I’ve never done any thing that required joining and would consider you the Grand Master of Joining!!
Keep up the great work and enjoy the fabulous weather!
yay! almost finished =)
i went to the state farmer’s market today to buy my “advance purchase” state fair admission ticket.
i’m going to the fair sunday, and look forward to seeing your finished piece in person!
That is looking amazing!
Wow! That is incredible progress!!!
