After the relative ease with which I completed square F-2, I was naively hopeful that square F-1 would go even more quickly.
My 4.5 mm Etimo hook in hand, and my familiar assortment of Red Heart Super Saver at my side, I worked past the obvious glitches and quickly completed what I would later come to realize was my first version of Square F-1. I finished so early, I took time to block it. I was going to be able to take the picture in early afternoon light.
Or so I thought.
When I finished blocking the square, it was clearly too small. Upon closer inspection of the photo in the book and measuring the height of the stitches, I came to the realization that the first two rounds of the square were most likely made with a treble crochet stitch, not the double crochet described in the directions.
I made a revised version of square F-1 by doing the following:
With first color, Ch 6 and join with a sl st
Round 1: Chain 4 (counts as first tr) 4 tr in center of ring, * Chain 5, 4 tr in ring, rep from * 2 times more, ch 5; join with sl st to beg tr. Finish off.
Round 2: Attach second color in ch-5 sp. Work *(3 tr, ch 5, 3 tr) (corner sp), ch 1 sk next 2 tr, (1 tr, ch 1, 1 tr), between second and third tr. rep from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to beg tr. Finish off.
Round 3: Attach third color in ch-5 corner sp. Work * (3dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 2, 1 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 1 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, repeat from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to beg dc. Finish off.
Round 4: Attach fourth color in ch-3 sp. Work * (3dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in top of center dc of 3 dc group of previous round, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 1. Repeat from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to first dc. Finish off.
Round 5: Attach fifth color in 3-ch sp. Work *(3dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp, sk 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, sk ch-1 and 1 dc, 3 dc in next dc, 3dc in next ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ski 1 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ski next dc and ch-1 sp, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from * 3 times more. Join with sl st to first dc. Finish off.

In addition to figuring out a version of F-1 that better fits with the pieces I have already made, I also finished Square A-3 pictured here:

and joined six of the squares I had already made.
