Today, while I was on my way to an appointment, my youngest son and I found ourselves in a part of town that he recognized from a previous shopping excursion.
There was a market in the area where he had purchased the best fortune cookie he had ever had. Not only had it been delicious, it was the source of the fortune that is the title of this blog post.
Since I am not one to turn down the opportunity to have inexhaustible wisdom and power handed to me on a small slip of paper tucked away in a delicious cookie, we decided that if there was time after my appointment, we would embark on an excursion of our own.
Good fortune, if not cookies, smiled on us, and as my son and I left my appointment and headed toward our next adventure (dog sitting my mom’s dog while she went to her own appointment) we found ourselves just one left turn from the market that had been the source of the magical cookies.
We signaled, made the turn, and made our way to Li Ming’s Global Mart:

The first sight that greeted us was the candy display:

Filled with Jelly Belly jelly beans, gummy sharks, psychedelic mini jawbreakers, and Lego brick candy, the candy display was a panoply of color.
As we went in search of fortune cookies, we found other items that are not stocked at our local grocery including these duck eggs:

and these sweet treats that resemble eggs:

While we did not find the fortune cookies we sought, we did get a squash:

and Japanese eggplant:

Then, as we left the store, we came across this delight:

While I was happy to get the vegetables, I still had a hankering for the fortune cookies we did not find. A quick search of the internet using the terms “crochet,” “fortune,” and “cookie” brought me to Alicia Kachmar’s blog, specifically a post that detailed her design for crochet fortune cookies (which you can find here).
Using Red Heart Super Saver yarn and a 5.0 mm hook, the results of my first effort were reasonably good, but I had to get dinner ready and did not have time to add the finishing flourishes that Ms. Kachmar has on her cookies:

Having determined that I wanted a plateful of these adorable cookies in all the colors of the rainbow, once dinner was done, I returned to my crochet and finished one more cookie before sunset:

and got a picture of the two cookies together:

I can see a lot of potential uses for this pattern: happy birthday fortune cookies, get well fortune cookies, baby shower fortune cookies; the possibilities are endless.
Now if I can just get my hands on some of that inexhaustible wisdom and power.
adorable!
and it fits in with your crocheted cookie theme of weeks past!<3
If you can’t find ’em, make ’em! CUTE!
This is a wonderfully fun project; thank you to Alicia Kachmar for making it available.
