Can this lampshade be saved?

While I was busy finishing up work on my granny square bag for summer, a friend of mine from high school pointed out several possible projects I might want to pursue once the bag was done, and one in particular caught my attention: It was a lamp with a crochet lampshade.

As luck would have it, I have at my disposal, a lampshade in need of a makeover.

Here are the lamp and its lampshade as it appeared on my back deck this afternoon:

As is pretty clear from the photo, this lampshade has seen better days. In an effort to return it to its glory of yore, I got out a basket full of my Red Heart Super Saver yarns, a 5.5 mm hook, and began making two-round granny squares using the same colors that I used in my recently completed bag.

By late afternoon, I had finished 15 squares:

Here is how they looked with the lamp:

I don’t yet have a complete vision of this project, but I will do what I usually do and continue to move forward, one stitch at a time.
